The Latest Trends in Cloud Computing: An Operators and Investors Perspective
This event showcases some of the latest trends in cloud computing and looks at some of the successful business models and companies in this emerging technology area. The panel will be composed of successful venture investors from the Indian venture capital industry as well as technology executives from companies in India that are succeeding in this space. There has been strong investment activity in this sector from leading venture capital firms, both in India as well as brand name firms in the US and Europe.
Cloud computing has had a meteoric rise in the past 12 - 24 months in the technology world. It is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the Internet. These services are broadly divided into three categories: Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). The name cloud computing was inspired by the cloud symbol that's often used to represent the Internet in flow charts and diagrams. The panelists in this discussion will provide insights into all three categories, but the most compelling opportunities in the cloud arena now are for companies that are leveraging the cloud delivery model and creating new software and applications that utilize the efficiencies of the cloud and offer a value proposition for the customer.
A cloud service has three distinct characteristics that differentiate it from traditional hosting. It is sold on demand, typically by the minute or the hour; it is elastic -- a user can have as much or as little of a service as they want at any given time; and the service is fully managed by the provider (the consumer needs nothing but a personal computer and Internet access). Significant innovations in virtualization and distributed computing, as well as improved access to high-speed Internet and a weak economy, have accelerated interest in cloud computing.
